Christmas can be a very fraught time of year, and it can really impact people’s mental health. It is important to check in with yourself and have some alone time to take care of yourself
Even before this happened to our family, I was the mom who was always trying to make sure everyone was happy on Christmas.
I am going to try to disconnect from being super-dialed in to my kid’s emotions. I don’t want to take on their anger or sadness. You helped me realize that they don’t care about Christmas. They really are in another state of mind, so I can let them be seething in a corner because I screwed up a gift that “triggered dysphoria” (which actually happened last night). I take it way too personally when people don’t like the gifts I spend days buying.
I like the idea of not just getting out of the room, but getting out of the house. I can take our dog on a walk around the block. And focus on being grateful for my dog and enjoying him. Breathing in the fresh air sounds good!
