“I Was Thirteen When They Put Me on Estrogen”

Jonni Skinner - Beyond Gender

At 13 years old, Jonni Skinner was diagnosed with a fake endocrine disorder and put on cross-sex hormones. At 14, he was misdiagnosed with "tall stature" and given higher doses to stunt his growth. The same doctors who threatened to remove him from his home if his mother didn't comply also falsified his medical records and sent him to sex shops for "treatment supplies." Eight years later, Jonni is speaking out about a medical scandal that turned vulnerable children into experimental subjects. This isn't just malpractice—it's systematic abuse disguised as healthcare, and Jonni's story exposes how the gender medicine industry operates in the shadows.

A voice for the voiceless victims

Jonni Skinner spent eight years believing he was transgender after being medicalized at 13. Born in rural Michigan to a religious family, Jonni was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at 4 and struggled with being a feminine boy in a conservative environment. When puberty began triggering severe body dysmorphia and religious guilt about his attraction to males, his mother sought help at the University of Michigan's gender clinic. What followed was a systematic campaign of medical abuse that would steal Jonni's adolescence and leave lasting physical and psychological damage.

The predatory mechanics of pediatric gender medicine

Jonni's story reveals the disturbing tactics used by gender clinics to ensnare vulnerable children. His gender therapist used the "suicidal trans kid" narrative to manipulate his mother, claiming she could have "a living daughter or a dead son." The endocrinologist threatened to have Jonni removed from his home as a ward of the state if his mother didn't comply with treatment. Critically, Jonni's mother never signed consent forms for the puberty blockers or estrogen treatments - only a general consent form that allowed Jonni to see the doctors. These weren't medical professionals—they were predators using institutional power to override parental authority and exploit a troubled child's desperation for relief from psychological pain.

The endocrinologist fabricated multiple diagnoses to justify experimental treatments: an "endocrine disorder related to puberty" at 13 (when Jonni had no hormone problems), "tall stature" at 14 when he was 5'7", and later a bladder ulcer when the real cause was likely the puberty blockers causing him to urinate blood. Each false diagnosis served to continue the medicalization pipeline while covering the doctors' tracks with insurance companies.

The sexual undertones of "treatment"

Perhaps most disturbing are the sexual elements woven throughout Jonni's treatment. The gender clinic sent him and his mother to what was essentially a sex shop, complete with the clinic's business card, to purchase sexualized "breast forms" with realistic nipples and fetish gear.

The shop Jonni and his mother were sent

The endocrinologist conducted inappropriately lengthy genital examinations and had private conversations with 13-year-old Jonni about anal sex and "feminine response cycles." These weren't medical consultations—they were grooming sessions disguised as healthcare.

The endocrinologist also maintained private email contact with Jonni outside of appointments, sending articles about intersex conditions directly to the child without his mother's knowledge. Every appointment included 45-80 minutes of private time between doctor and patient, creating an environment where manipulation could flourish unchecked.

The devastating physical toll

The medical interventions caused severe and immediate harm. The puberty blocker implant triggered daily muscle spasms so severe that Jonni couldn't attend school, leaving him homebound and isolated. He developed urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction with painful erections, depression worse than he'd ever experienced, and began urinating blood—a symptom the original endocrinologist refused to address.

When another doctor finally found a bladder ulcer, no bacterial or other cause could be identified. The blocker was eventually removed after Jonni's mother "threw an absolute fit," but by then the damage was extensive. Jonni had lost significant weight and muscle tone, becoming physically weak and continuing to suffer side effects from the estrogen he remained on for years.

The power imbalance and falsified records

When Jonni finally obtained his medical records as an adult, he discovered extensive falsification. Doctors had written that he was "happy" when he was suffering, claimed he "wanted the blocker out because he wanted more curves" when the opposite was true, and even fabricated claims that he wanted to "cut off his genitalia"—something Jonni emphatically states he never expressed.

This systematic falsification of medical records creates an almost insurmountable power imbalance for victims seeking legal recourse. The very people who harmed them control the official narrative of their treatment, making it nearly impossible to prove abuse in court.

Breaking free and finding truth

Jonni's awakening began in late 2023 when a new endocrinologist suggested he consider going off hormones—something that had never been presented as an option. The final catalyst was reading the WPATH Files leak in early 2024, which revealed the lies underlying the "standards of care" that had governed his treatment. Realizing he'd been systematically deceived, Jonni stopped all hormones in late 2023/early 2024.

The withdrawal process was brutal, involving intense hot flashes, cold sweats, muscle spasms, fatigue, and emotional dysregulation that lasted months. But gradually, his body began to recover. Painful erections resolved, breast fluid leakage decreased dramatically, testosterone levels began returning, and he started developing some secondary male characteristics he'd been denied as an adolescent.

The ongoing impact and call for justice

At 22, Jonni still bears the physical markers of his medicalization—developed breasts, widened hips, a smaller frame than he would have naturally achieved, and a high voice. These changes affect every aspect of his life, from dating relationships (where he's often fetishized by "trans-attracted" men) to simple social interactions where people constantly question his history.

Because Michigan's statute of limitations for medical malpractice is only two years, even for minors, Jonni has no legal recourse. He would have needed to file suit by age 15—an impossibility when he was still under the influence of his abusers. This legal reality leaves him, like many victims, with only his voice as a weapon against the system that harmed him.

Why this matters beyond one story

Jonni's experience isn't an outlier—it's the logical outcome of an unregulated industry that has positioned itself above oversight. His story demonstrates how gender clinics use institutional power to override parental authority, fabricate medical necessity, and exploit vulnerable children's psychological distress for ideological and potentially sexual purposes.

The medical establishment's response to cases like Jonni's reveals the depth of the scandal. Rather than investigating obvious abuse, medical societies have circled the wagons to protect practitioners and preserve the profitable pipeline of pediatric transition. Jonni's courage in speaking out, despite having no legal recourse and facing ongoing physical and social consequences, represents the only accountability these institutions currently face.

Looking toward justice

Jonni will be speaking at Genspect's "The Bigger Picture" conference in Albuquerque about the costs of early medicalization. His story joins a growing chorus of detransitioner voices demanding accountability from the medical system that failed them. While the law may have failed Jonni individually, his testimony contributes to the mounting evidence that may finally force meaningful reform and prevent other children from experiencing the abuse he endured.

As Jonni puts it, he often feels like "the Titan Atlas just holding up" the weight of his experience, but he's determined to "lay down the burden and let the truth carry itself through." His story is a testament to both human resilience and the urgent need for justice in a medical system that has betrayed its most vulnerable patients.
