Options to psychotherapy
As the number of dreadful stories about the harmful impact of psychotherapy on ROGD kids continues to increase, I have increasingly sought other options. The advice below was sent to me by a parent.
Something that may be very useful for other ROGD kids is Occupational Therapy. Psychology was a disastrous move for us, it led from anxiety
and depression to gender dysphoria and advice to my son on how to transition. On top of that my son then refused further psychology as he had his ’solution’ and hates talk therapy.
An Occupational Therapist on the other hand delivers their therapy while doing interesting stuff and does not get involved in gender, it’s all about building capacity and functioning. My son is still ROGD, still transitioning, it’s unfortunately not changed any of that, but they are building capability, learning how to better regulate their emotions and manage overwhelm and starting to tackle the severe anxiety a little and get out a bit more. We can only hope that ultimately this also helps them decide to stop transitioning.
The poem ‘I’m struggling’ describes our life so well.
This is interesting. How does one approach an Occupational Therapist with this request? Do OTs see clients specifically for a diagnosis of anxiety? I have not heard of this.
