Adults want to spend less time on their phones too. We all must look at our time spent engaing with our phone screen and shift to other things like reading, being outside, and lots of other things. Like the analogy you mentioned of the days when everyone smoked, we can shift away from obsessive screen time if we become aware that it isn't good for us.
This topic is so important and almost everyone globally seems to be ignoring the negative smart phone impact on our children (and adults). Many thanks to you and Haidt and a few others on this. I love hearing some school districts in the US are trying to ban phones. Enforcement will be interesting. I hope teachers are supported. Some parents seem to be a roadblock too. They feel entitled to be in touch with their kids all throughout the day—- distracting them from learning.
