Like many women, I’ve spent the last few years watching in disbelief as the word “woman” became something complicated. A word that once grounded our rights, our history, and our very reality was suddenly declared offensive, exclusionary - even dangerous - if used truthfully.
This week, the UK Supreme Court chose to support women’s rights. It said that, under equality law, the word woman means what it always has: an adult human female. Biological sex matters.
This ruling may seem obvious to many, but its significance cannot be overstated. For years, women who tried to speak up about the erosion of sex-based rights were met with accusations, abuse, and often devastating consequences. I know this not just from watching it happen to others, but from living through it myself.
I joined Wendy Grace on Spirit Radio to talk about what this ruling means. We spoke about the grassroots bravery of groups like For Women Scotland, who brought this case forward. We talked about the reality facing vulnerable women in prisons and shelters. And we talked about how, finally, the tide may be turning.
For too long, women have been told to stay quiet. To ignore our instincts. To silence our concerns for fear of being called bigots or worse. This ruling doesn’t just set a legal precedent, it sends a cultural signal: we are legally protected if we speak up; if we say what we know is true.
If we want to reclaim reality, it’s going to take more than one court decision. It’s going to take all of us, telling the truth, without shame.
