When Parents Disagree

Gender: A Wider Lens

Reflecting on our October 2021 episode, I still remember how raw and real the conversation felt. We tackled one of the most emotionally charged aspects of supporting a gender-distressed teen: what happens when parents don’t agree. Whether it’s a quiet tug-of-war behind closed doors or full-blown custody battles, the tension between parents can become a major factor in a child’s experience—and in their outcomes.

In that episode, Sasha and I explored how family dynamics can break down when one parent wants to pause and reflect, while the other wants to affirm and move forward quickly. We talked through the emotional toll this kind of disagreement can take—not just on the parents, but especially on the child caught in the middle. We also took a step back to examine the bigger picture: what underlying issues might be at play in the family, and how important it is to address those, too.

Looking back now, this conversation still resonates deeply. It was a reminder that gender distress is rarely happening in a vacuum—and that often, the real work lies in rebuilding trust, improving communication, and staying grounded as parents navigate incredibly difficult terrain.
