Looking back on our discussion from September 2021, this episode remains as relevant as ever. We explored the rapid rise of the term nonbinary and how an unprecedented number of young people have come to identify as neither male nor female. Drawing from Ian Hacking’s concept of “making people up,” we examined how new classifications and identity categories emerge and take on a life of their own.
We also tackled some key questions: Does identifying as nonbinary necessitate medical intervention? Are there personality traits that tend to correlate with this identity, and do those traits differ between males and females? For parents, how should they respond when a quiet, introspective child says they don’t fit into the gender binary? And how does the nonbinary label function for those who move in and out of transgender identification?
Looking back now, this conversation was an early attempt to untangle a fast-moving cultural shift—one that continues to evolve
