Looking back on our discussion from September 2021, I’m reminded of how urgent and complex the conversation around social transition was—and still is today. In that episode, Sasha and I explored how social transition became the first-line intervention for young people questioning their gender, despite the lack of solid evidence supporting it.
We talked about how schools, increasingly guided by the gender-affirmative model, began actively facilitating these transitions—sometimes even without parental involvement. Families often feel immense pressure from professionals to support these changes, even when they have concerns about long-term consequences. And while social transition is often framed as a neutral or reversible step, we unpacked how, for many, it can lead to more challenges than it resolves.
Revisiting this episode now, it remains a crucial discussion, especially as more families, clinicians, and policymakers begin to grapple with the unintended consequences of socially transitioning young people.
